United States from coast to coast is put on high alert. Los Angeles, Dallas, Florida, Philadelphia and many other cities are in the process of shutting down. Federal offices, schools and business are closing at noon. New York’s Twin Towers World Trade Center was the first site attacked today. Followed by The Pentagon. Reports about another 767 flying from Chicago to Pittsburgh has crashed but is not confirmed that it is a terrorist attack. Roughly 50,000 people were being evacuated from the World Trade Center at the time of the collapse. New York’s World Trade Center is the hub of financial and many worldwide businesses. New York’s Twin Towers World Trade Center falls to the ground. The Twin Towers that carried antennas for the New York area stations are now gone. Both towers were hit early this morning leaving gaping holes in the 110-story buildings. The collapse of the towers has caused a programming nightmare for radio stations all over the country. Causalities are unknown at this time. CNBC reported that an American Airlines 767 was hijacked before it crashed into the World Trade Center. New York Stock Exchange is closed. -=-=
Attack on World Trade Center silences New York stations. This morning a suspected terrorist attack on New York’s Twin Towers World Trade Center – one of which contains antennas for the New York area stations has silenced the majority of New York stations. The attack occurred at 8:45 am EDT. CNN reported a commercial jet hijacked from Boston crashed into the north side of the World trade Center

It is the world's largest commercial complex, with many businesses, government agencies, and international trade organizations. Most prominent are the 110-story rectangular twin towers, one rising to 1,362 ft (415 m) and the other to 1,368 ft (417 m). Designed by Minoru Yamasaki and Emery Roth, the towers and concourse portion of the center were completed in 1973 at a cost of $750 million. A massive terrorist car-bomb explosion damaged portions of the complex in 1993, killing six people and causing more than $300 million in damages. In 1995, Sheik Omar Abdel Rahman and nine other militant Muslims (Sudanese, Egyptian, American, and Jordanian citizens) were convicted of conspiracy and other charges related to the bombing. In 1998 the so-called mastermind, Ramzi Yousef, also was convicted of the bombing and sentenced to life plus 240 years in prison.

STATE OF EMERGENCY Sep 11 2001 D.C. Declared State of Emergency; Activists Call for U.S. Restraint Washington, D.C. and northern Virginia has been declared a state of emergency and all people are being asked to stay in their homes until further notice after a plane crashed into the Pentagon this morning in what appears to be part of a coordinated terrorist attack against the United States. The National Guard has been activated to clear traffic on roads and patrol the streets. The U.S. military has been put on a high state of alert, and military helicopters and fighter jets are buzzing in the skies above the District and northern Virginia. President Bush has declared the plane crashes at the Pentagon and the World Trade Organization in New York as terrorist attacks, saying that freedom has been threatened and that the United States will "hunt down" and punish those responsible. "Freedom itself was attacked this morning by a faceless coward and freedom will be defended," Bush said. However, local activists in D.C. worry that the U.S. government and military are planning to escalate violence around the world in response. They say that the attacks on the Pentagon and World Trade Organization are the result of oppressive economic and military policies that the United States inflicts on other countries and people. "There seems to be no acknowledgement of how this could be related to economic and military policies of the United States and the World Trade Organization," said Bork, an anti-corporate globalization activist. "How can you not expect that something is going to happen. The U.S. is going to have to change it's disregard for the rest of the world and the poor or they are going to see this continue to happen . . . This is a perfect example of why these policies have to change." Emergency crews continue to operate at the Pentagon. No detailed information is yet available on how many people have been killed or injured but the airports and main roads have been closed. Area help agencies are asking people to donate blood.

Downtown D.C., Federal Buildings Evacuated After Plane Crash Downtown Washington, D.C. and all federal office buildings including the Pentagon and White House have been evacuated after an American Airlines plane crashed into the Pentagon this morning. According to reports, the plane smashed into the northwest side of the Pentagon, going from the outside wall through five rings to the inner courtyard. Part of the roof of the Pentagon has collapsed. The National Guard has been activated and the Pentagon has set up a temporary command post at the Virginia Department of Transportation on Columbia Pike. The incident occurred almost simultaneously as two planes crashed into the World Trade Organization in New York, causing the buildings two towers to collapse. Another plane has also crashed in Southwestern Pennsylvania. D.C. Independent Media Center reporters on the scene at the Pentagon say things are calm but smoke continues to bellow from the building into neighboring areas. "The scene on the ground was calm but kind of agitated," said videographer Brian Long. "They were evacuating all of the people so there were throngs of people moving. There was a lot of smoke. There was a massive Plum of smoke that was spreading into Crystal City." buss service,Major roads such as Interstate 395, Columbia Pike, Washington Boulevard,Route 110 and the 14th Street Bridge has been shut down. The Pentagon Metro stop has also been shut down. Most public schools and universities have also closed until further notice.

WKTU-FM is currently broadcasting using its midtown back up. Sources say Spanish Broadcasting’s WPAT-FM is using its backup from the Empire State building. WKCR-FM is unknown at this time. FYI...The New York NPR affiliate, WNYC 93.9 FM, is now broadcasting on 91.5 FM as WNYE, the station of the NYC Board of Ed. Scott Opie & Anthony broadcast out of Jarad’s WLIR-FM, Garden City, NY. WLIR-FM was "nice enough" to allow Opie & Anthony to broadcast their feed. Opie & Anthony normally air from Infinity’s WNEW-FM, NY but due Tuesday’s tragedy in New York traffic was not allowed into Manhattan. [from insideradio.com ]

He was the chief financial manager for RCA Broadcast Division and was in that division's broadcast equipment department. He was the financial project manager for the installation of the transmission tower on WTC. It was his final project and the project that broke his health and hastened his death at age 48. Dad had worked on the Sears Tower transmitter, the John Handcock building transmitter, the transmitter outside of the San Francisco airport (the beautification groups gave him a hard time because that tower had to be aesthetically pleasing, and it is), the Oral Robert's organization tower and many smaller projects. But I always considered the WTC tower his monument, partly because I saw it so many times flying high above the NYC skyline and partly because the project had so many difficulties that it was a major factor in his early death. I really would like to have a small piece of that transmission tower as a remembrance of my dad. I know there is a very high possibility of skepticism on your part: that you may think that I am just a souvenir collector. Here are some little known information about the tower and you can contact me for more verification. The tower was designed and built in Gibbstown, NJ at the then-RCA broadcast transmission assembly facility. This facility was sold by GE after the GE / RCA merger and is now an independent company. The WTC transmitter ( think she ment 'antenna' ) was "tuned", as were all RCA transmission towers,by using a special FCC broadcasting license, which allowed the design engineers to broadcast test patterns to a site in Cherry Hill, NJ, exactly 2 miles away. The facility (still in use) in Gibbstown is constructed in wood, including the very large transmission tower testing turntable. Any large steel members would have interfered with transmission tower(antenna) testing. For the WTC transmission tower, in particular: 1) The chief engineer for the Port Authority at the time of the installation was Malcome Levi (or Levy.) He and dad became good friends during the tower erection. 2) The transmission tower was installed by a company which used American Indians for the high construction work. RCA used this company almost exclusively for its broadcast transmission erection. Dad used to call them "the skywalkers". (He used this phrase long before the "Star War" sagas.) 3) The large law suit brought by the Port Authority for damages caused by the improper "tuning" of the broadcast(antenna) signal patterns, broke my father's then frail health. He was the main "number cruncher" and a participant in the negotiations meetings held to settle the claim. RCA had counter sued to received monies stilled owed. I believe he was right. What caused the second tower to collapse was mainly due to the vacuum created by the collapse of the first tower, which exerted a force on the remaining tower that it could not sustain because of its weakened condition. You see Dad talked to Mr. Levi a lot about me because I was at Drexel U, studying to be a mechanical engineer. Dad was never quite sure that the engineering world was ready for a female engineer.) I hope you can help. If I can no longer see "Dad's monument", I would cherish any little piece of it. In a day of darkness, I was proud that,at least in the early part of that Black Tuesday, the terrorists had attacked "his" tower and it remained standing in defiance. When the first tower collapsed, I thought "his" tower would remain as a symbol of American ingenuity and Yankee determination. And that maybe, just maybe, Dad and Malcome were helping from heaven to keep the tower from collapsing and causing further loss of life. When it fell, I felt his death all over again. Now, I cry for the friends and relatives of neighbors.
