More About the World Wide Web

The World Wide Web (also known as WWW and Web) was started by CERN, the European Laboratory for Particle Physics. The Web is a distributed multimedia information system based on hypertext. Let's go over that one term at a time:

      Hypertext
Footnotes are an example of hypertext. When you see a footnote, you know to look down at the bottom of the page, the end of the chapter, or the end of the book to find out more information. The Web uses electronic hypertext. On the Web, when you see a highlighted word or phrase, you can click on it with your mouse to go to some other document to find out more.
      Multimedia
The Web is multimedia because it allows you to view images, listen to audio files, and even view movies.
      Distributed
Anyone with the right equipment and a connection to the Internet can put up a Web server, and then anyone else can link to that Web server. This is why the Web is called distributed; the information available on it does not all exist on one central machine. It is distributed around the world.

It's important to remember that the Web is not Mosaic or Netscape. Think of the word Web as being similar to the word Email. People can use many different programs to access Email: Eudora, Pegasus, Microsoft Mail, CC:Mail, Ben, etc. People can use many different programs (called browsers) to access the Web: Netscape, Microsoft Internet Explorer, Mosaic, Cello, Lynx, etc.

There's a lot more to learn about the Web, and there's plenty of information out there about it. Try using one of the search engines on our search page to look for "Web Tutorial".
