Every station is legally required to maintain a "Public File" of their community service programming, to regularly update the file, and to present it to any member of the public upon request during business hours. They must honor this request while you are present and make a copy for you; otherwise they are in violation of FCC rules. Information contained in the file, and that which is absent, can help make a strong case to the press, public, and the FCC about the station's commitment to public service. |
Clear Channel: Far from fostering a diversity of voices, Clear Channel's monopolistic practices are accelerating the homogenization of our airwaves. This company syndicates both Rush Limbaugh and Dr. Laura to hundreds of stations nationwide, shuts out independent artists who can't afford to go through high-priced middlemen, and is responsible for taking the practice of voice tracking to new heights (or depths, depending on your perspective). |
Voice tracking
:
Is the practice of creating brief, computer-assisted voice segments that attempt to fool the listener into thinking that a program is locally produced, when in fact the same content is being broadcast to upwards of 75 stations nationwide from a central site. So you have one overworked 'radio personality' recording the phrases, "Hello Modesto!" "Hi Fowler!" "How you feeling Oakdale?" all day long. |
| Clear Channel is the
corporation that has benefited most dramatically from the FCC's weakening
of ownership rules in 1996. That makes the company a strategic target because they have damaged media diversity and violated the public interest so severely in cities across the country. |
What
You Can Do About Clear Channel Sadly, the FCC has generally ruled in the interest of
large corporations |
To determine which stations near
you are owned by Clear Channel, simply visit the company's radio section at http://www.clearchannel.com

-=-=-= july 2002 ---0-0-0-0- this just in.... 7/22/02 To: Randy Michaels From: Ron Jacobs I’m not one to kick a person when he’s down, but since you proved to me during our exchange
of phone calls in May 2001, you are definitely not a person —and on behalf of
everyone in radio without the ability or vocabulary to do so—here’s
a Proclamation just for you, turkey. PROCLAMATION By the Big Kahuna Whereas Candy Ass Randy Michaels parlayed no discernable talent other than his
unquenchable hunger to kiss ass and attract attention to his loathsome self
to a position of some import in American radio; and Whereas, Michaels stepped over, bullied, cheated and lied
to smarter and more talented people, ones who actually loved
and cared about radio, to achieve his egotistical and self-serving goals; and Whereas, Michaels in doing the above to hype ratings applied no-brainer,
quick fix, dipshit methods to fringe radio stations in markets
where the major leagues never play; and Whereas, Michaels convinced the red-neck, tobacco spittin’
used car hustlers who owned them there coffee pot radio stations
that he, Michaels, could make them tons of money, which is the
only reason the Good Ol’ Boys were in the radio biz; and Whereas, Michaels proceeded to preach that the FCC Act of 1996,
which authorized Deregulation of Broadcast Licenses,
would lead to a Licensee heaven where the streets were paved with gold; and Whereas, Michaels revealed from the start of his reign of terror
that no one or nothing would stop his Hitler-like march to
acquire stations for his corporate masters until they built
up Clear Channel into the largest ownership monstrosity in the history of broadcasting; and Whereas, Michaels, during his term as CEO of Clear Channel showed zero compassion
for company employees, stockholders, listeners, believers in the United States
Bill of Rights, music lovers, recording artists, vendors, concert goers,
public service groups, concert promoters,
advocates of low power FM and countless others negatively
affected by his soulless and senseless methods of operation; and Whereas, Michaels ignored all criticism, suggestions and questions
of his actions and behavior while continuing with impunity to
plunge the reputation of his company into the media toilet,
taking the public’s perception of all of radio with it; and Whereas, Michaels proved once again Lord Acton’s 19th Century observation,
"Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely;"
and, fortunately was limited from doing even further damage
only by his own stupidity, lack of sophistication,
diminished intellectual capacity and general propensity for pea-brained decisions; and Whereas, Michaels has on the 22nd day of July. 2002,
"Agreed to relinquish his role as CEO of Clear Channel Radio
and will now head up Clear Channel's New Technologies Division,
" which is a transparent euphemism for,
"Kicked out on his dumpy ass and given a bogus title to save face,
—like anyone is going to believe this bullshit;" and Whereas, On the real new technology, the Internet and email,
(which Dandy Randy never understood in his heyday),
word is spreading faster than crabs at the
legendary First Deejay Convention, that radio
is finally rid of this blight on the biz,
shmuck from the muck, noxious nincompoop,
no-talent nerd, worthless wuss, peripheral ponce,
big-mouthed bum, under qualified quack, fart-faced fakir,
useless uddersucker, ineffectual imbecile,
dork-brained dumbbell, beer-guzzling buffoon,
lecherous loser, contemptible cretin,
sorry ass simpleton and unambiguous asshole, and Whereas, Thousands of radio lovers on both sides
of the microphone are celebrating the
unceremonious dumping of Randy Michaels,
and he will no longer disgrace and ruin the
medium we all love, to the sounds of the
Silhouette's immortal "Get A Job,"
we Keepers of The Final Modulation Tube and Guardians
of the Tower raise our fists high to proclaim,
"Screw You Randy Michaels, One Time For Each Kilowatt You Distorted!" NOW, THEREFORE, I Big Kahuna of The Great And Eternal Ether,
do hereby proclaim the week of July 22, 2002 as GOOD RIDDANCE RANDY MICHAELS WEEK and do hereby proclaim the day of July 26, 2002 as GOOD RIDDANCE RANDY MICHAELS DAY on American Radio and encourage each and all to
get involved and participate in broadcasts,
announcements and sly ad libs celebrating
this event and tormenting the evil son of a bitch. IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and
caused the official seal of the Great And Eternal
Ether to be affixed on this 22nd of July. Big Kahuna * Today, Tuesday July 23rd, would have been the 65th birthday

which controls 70 percent of the nation's major concert
business and operates the country's largest chain of radio stations.
In the Twin Cities area, it manages the Target Center
and owns seven stations that account for 46 percent of the area's FM listenership. "It has a monopolistic feel to it,

Clear and present danger
Clear Channel already determines much of what we see and hear. It's about to control what we read. By Tali Woodward Clear Channel Communications owns seven San Francisco radio stations, a massive concert business, and many of the city's billboards. In fact, it's one of the largest – and most criticized – media companies in the United States. And soon, a Clear Channel subsidiary called Adshel may also control the street distribution of newspapers in much of San Francisco. .......

AFTRA accused Clear Channel Albany of unfair labor practices.
Accusations levied at Clear Channel’s WGY-AM, WRVE-FM and WHRL-FM, Albany.
AFTRA has represented the stations since the 1970s. Clear Channel took over the stations
from Dame Media in August 1998 and assumed the terms of the bargaining agreement at that time.
The current agreement expired on June 30, 2000 and parties have been in negotiations since then.
The last negotiations took place on January 18th and 19th when the parties
signed an agreement to settle grievances.
The parties agreed on a wage and fee increase of 3% over three years to be retroactive from June 30,2000.

On February 5th Clear Channel told the union that it was canceling the negotiations
scheduled for February 13th and 14th. The union requested
evidence that Clear Channel did not have majority support from the bargaining
unit and has not received a response from Clear Channel to date. The union is
now saying the Clear Channel violated Section 8 (a) (1) and (5) of the Act by
"failing and refusing to continue negotiations, and by unilaterally withdrawing
recognition from the Union as the lawful collective bargaining representative of
the unit."

But, of course, radio has never seen anything quite like Clear Channel, which has swallowed
up nearly 1,200 radio stations while putting its unique -- and some say nasty -- stamp on the
business. In a series of recent Salon reports, insiders from the radio, record and concert

It's 8 am and I just got off the phone with a friend in New Hampshire. WGIR personality Chris Connors commited suicide this past weekend. WGIR was one of the station's purchased by Capstar/AMFM (NYSE=" CRB / AMFM " AKA= AMF ) last year and 90% of the staff was replaced by the Prophet system. (PSI wizard computer automation WAN under Win3.11? ? ? ) After years in the business Chris still pulled weekends at the station and was seriously thinking of getting back in full-time when he was let go like so many have. I'm sure this wasn't the only reason as to why he chose to take his life, but I'm sure it had an impact. My condolences to his many friends and family. We tend to forget how business effects people. Have we become so hard, so greedy, so uncaring for our fellow man that we would trample all over him just for the sake of Prophet(Tm). May this serve as a scorching reminder to those in the corporate world. I've watched so many friends lose jobs, lose careers, lose their roots from moving to find work, and lose heart. Now it's become much more personal. (Like virtually every other sizable radio player, Clear Channel paid the ratings company to
provide it with ratings and demographic information.) Talks continued during the first quarter of 2001,
a period that coincided with the development of plans for Arbitron to spin off from its parent,
Ceridian Corporation. But these discussions apparently went nowhere, because on March 30,
when Arbitron CEO Stephen B. Morris was slated
to mark his enterprise's initial listing on the New York Stock Exchange by ringing the exchange's closing bell,
Clear Channel sent a letter declaring that
it had no intention of using Arbitron surveys
for the markets in question.
This screw-you gesture spooked potential Arbitron investors, and for good reason. After all,
according to Daily Variety, Clear Channel stations account for 22 percent of Arbitron's total revenue,
and the end of those 130 contracts would result in a loss of around 6.8 percent of its gross.
Despite this nastiness, Clear Channel and Arbitron are still in business together

Clear Channel & Payola: The Federal Communications Commission has fined the nation's
largest radio conglomerate $ 8,000 for violating payola laws.... "This is a weak slap on the wrist from a feeble commission that
is no match for Clear Channel or any of the other big radio conglomerates that are powerful players in Washington,"
said Jeff Cohen, founder of Fairness and Accuracy in reporting, a New York-based media watchdog group.
"The FCC is obviously ill-equipped to deal with this new form of payola. It's no longer about some deejay in the
control room stuffing a few bucks into his back pocket. These days payola is being done right out in the open
by huge conglomerates. And nobody in Washington seems to care." - Fair.org -Los Angeles Times (10/20/00)

recent Clear Channel changes have meant doing more with much less
-- smaller budgets and fewer employees.
One key way Clear Channel has saved
money is to eliminate hundreds of on-air personality positions
by simply having one company jock send out his or her shows
to dozens of sister stations. The practice is known as "voice tracking,"
and thanks to clever editing, the shows still often sound local in various markets.
But for the company jocks doing the voice tracking and saving Clear Channel millions
in announcer fees, "you get maybe $3 a day," says a former company jock.
"That's forced labor because you don't really have a choice of doing it, and
they're not paying a fair rate."
Another point of contention for some Clear Channel programmers has been the company's
national contests, in which listeners can win big prizes, such as $10,000, if they're the
pre-selected caller dialing into a 1-888 number. The catch is that listeners are simultaneously
competing with Clear Channel listeners in dozens of other markets, making the odds of winning tiny.
Worse, jocks at each of the stations have to make it seem like the winners are local
listeners. They do that by downloading interviews with the winners recorded by Clear
Channel corporate. Then engineers at the various stations dub in the voice of local jocks
"interviewing" the winners to make it seem as if that station's personality is giving away the
big prize.
"It was the most distasteful thing I ever did in broadcasting," says one jock who played
along and "interviewed" contest winners. "You're deceiving the audience."
Florida's attorney general's office agreed. Last year it fined Clear Channel $80,000

Beverly Hills, CA, March 2, 2000—SamsDirect Internet, the Beverly Hills-based Internet marketing firm announced today that it has registered 60,000 domain names in the top-level ".CC" domain since January of this year. The ".CC" Domain works worldwide just like .com—with the difference being that millions of good .CC domains are still available, while nearly all good .com names have been taken. SamsDirect Internet credited the success of the SPOT.CC marketing campaign to the general public’s appetite for easy-to-remember domain names, the ease of using the company’s www.SPOT.CC Domain Retrieval Service and, most importantly, SamsDirect Internet’s unique marketing alliance with Clear Channel Communications, Inc. Clear Channel is one of the world’s largest radio broadcasters with, including announced acquisitions, over 800 radio stations in the United States alone. "It’s like catching lightning in a bottle," states David Sams, Chairman/CEO of SamsDirect Internet. "The last time I experienced something with this much instant heat was when I launched the Oprah Winfrey Show while head of marketing for King World." "This is truly one of the great marketing stories of the new millenium," states Randall Mays, Executive Vice President and CFO of Clear Channel Communications, Inc. "It clearly illustrates the incredible branding power of Radio as an advertising medium. We are very committed to this effort and plan to make the .CC Domain as popular as .COM." Clear Channel stations benefit from the sale of each domain name sold, and is putting much of the proceeds back into the local markets to enhance each station’s Internet presence. The SPOT.CC marketing campaign began testing in Orlando, Florida earlier this year. National rollout of the SPOT.CC radio advertisements began in early February. Many of the Clear Channel radio stations have, or are in the process of switching their current .com websites to .CC. Some of these include http://www.magic107.cc , Orlando; http://www.y-100.cc , Miami; and the popular http://www.kissfm.cc in Los Angeles. "Our stations are enjoying this promotion," states Clear Channel Radio Group President Randy Michaels. "They feel as though they are at the center of something big on the Internet. It really is a convergence between the two mediums. Our desire is to make .CC the second most popular Domain on the net over the next 12 to 18 months—ahead of .net and .org." "This campaign targets the general consumer who did not think about registering a good .com domain four or five years ago," states Renee Sams, Co-Chair and COO of SamsDirect Internet. "We have moms registering domains for their kids; new brides registering domains to post their wedding pictures; and small business owners registering a good .CC domain to replace a long, not-so-memorable .com domain name. This is the public's second chance to grab a good Domain while they're available." WJJJ-FM, Pittsburgh PD Clarke Ingram fired while mother is in ICU.
Clear Channel also canned four other WJJJ full-time staff members last Monday in favor of virtual voice tracking –
where a parttimer records program content and the station can go jockless.
Ingram had been with WJJJ-FM for two years.
His mother has been ill and he is attending to her while looking for future employment.
Earnest James managed Clear Channel stations in New Orleans
for six years before leaving voluntarily this spring
to run four Infinity Broadcasting stations in
San Francisco.
"When I started at Clear Channel it was great,
a great place to work," he says.
"What happened was the culture changed when the company grew. Management became Randy-ized, which is much more contentious.
The culture changed to the point of making me
uncomfortable going to work every day." In what employees suggest was a typically heavy-handed
Clear Channel move, the company's Indianapolis stations
recently pulled out of a fundraising dinner for the Indiana Children's Wish Fund, after management learned
that a radio competitor, the CEO of Emmis Communications,
would be honored at the dinner. According to the Indianapolis Star, the local Clear Channel GM
even asked for his $5,000 charity donation back;
Emmis made up the difference to the Children's Wish Fund. - - - - - - - -
- - - - For jocks and programmers, recent Clear Channel changes
have meant doing more with much less --
smaller budgets and fewer employees.
One key way Clear Channel has saved money is to eliminate
hundreds of on-air personality positions
by simply having one company jock send out his or her shows
to dozens of sister stations.
The practice is known as "voice tracking,"
and thanks to clever editing,
the shows still often sound local in various markets. But for the company jocks doing the voice tracking
and saving Clear Channel millions in announcer fees,
"you get maybe $3,000 a year," says a former company jock.
"That's forced labor because you don't really have
a choice of doing it, and they're not paying a fair rate." Another point of contention for some Clear Channel programmers
has been the company's national contests,
in which listeners can win big prizes, such as $10,000, if they're the pre-selected caller dialing
into a 1-888 number.
The catch is that listeners are simultaneously
competing with Clear Channel listeners in dozens of other markets, making the odds of winning tiny. Worse, jocks at each of the stations have to make it
seem like the winners are local listeners.
They do that by downloading interviews with the winners recorded by Clear Channel corporate.
Then engineers at the various stations dub in the voice of local jocks
"interviewing" the winners to make it seem as if that station's personality is giving away the big prize. "It was the most distasteful thing I ever did in broadcasting,
" says one jock who played along and "interviewed" contest winners.
"You're deceiving the audience." Florida's attorney general's office agreed. Last year it fined Clear Channel $80,000 for deceptive trade practices

Austin: An Austin-based public interest group that tracks money in Texas
politics criticized Governor George W. Bush today for his preliminary
decision to ignore the voluntary presidential campaign spending limits
adopted in the wake of the Watergate scandal.(r)
"Governor Bush's decision to blow the lid off the presidential
George Bush will rely on millions of dollars in special-interest money
to fund his television blitz of the key primary states,"
said Texans for Public Justice (TPJ) Director Craig McDonald.
"Bush is no conservative when it comes to stockpiling campaign cash,
and he has demonstrated little compassion for political reform."

"The George W. Bush Success Story" and
"A heartwarming tale about baseball, $1.7 billion, and a lot of swell friends."
Here are a couple of summarizing quotes:
"Although neither Bush nor Hicks knew it then [when Bush was elected Governor of Texas in 1994],
each would considerably enhance the other's fortune."
"In a certain sense, all this favoritism by UTIMCO was merely business as usual.
It was and is, as they say, the corporate culture of the financial industry."
SHOCK JOCK CASE -- The Stanislaus County district attorney's office
will not file charges against a Los Angeles radio show host who asked women working in
Rep. Gary Condit's office on-air questions that the women considered abusive. The incident occurred July 12, when John Kobylt of KFI-AM ( a CLEAR CHANNEL STATION ) and a partner went to the congressman's Modesto district office with radio gear. and called another a "fat b----." Deputy District Attorney Dave Harris said Wednesday that the radio host is protected by First Amendment free speech guarantees
and did not commit a crime. ( assult - verbal Look it up mr D.A. ) The women said they were disappointed
and would complain to Harris' boss, the LAME
District Attorney James Brazelton.
