To Whom It May Concern:
I am writing to express my disappointment and offense in the manner
of how two KFI talk show "hosts" conducted themselves while
guests in my community January 29, 2003. As a resident of the
Modesto area, I was appalled to hear the sophomoric antics
from the John and Ken show as they broadcasted live in front of
Scott Peterson's home. Can you tell me just how exploiting a
family's tragedy as "entertainment" is serving the public's interest?
Not only did these infantile "shock jocks" harass a neighborhood
in my community, they were disparaging Modesto and our community
on the air, belittling the people who call this area home. Might I remind
these arrogant and ignorant hosts that the food that is put on their
families tables are a direct result of our "flat boring land". As a
lifelong resident of this part of California, I take personal offense to
the superficial attitude that we are subordinate to the styles
and trends of the Southern California culture.
Having previous interactions with the Clear Channel Communications
broadcasting company, it doesn't surprise me that these hosts behave
the way they do. There was a Clear Channel shock jock in Tampa that
slaughtered a live pig on the air with listeners eating the raw testicles for prizes.
Then there was Joe Lopez of Clear Channel's KMEL
out of San Francisco who pulled a hoax on a Bay Area neighborhood
by going door to door dressed as a prisoner in handcuffs looking for
someone with a hacksaw. These are just two examples of what
Clear Channel considers "entertainment". These are criminal offenses.
With the mantra of "stooping to the lowest common denominator",
packaging such stunts as broadcast worthy programming
is simply preposterous and irresponsible.
When the KFI hosts were confronted with their lack of respect
and insensitivity, they responded by vilifing their challengers and
resorted to childish name-calling, all in the name of serving the public interest.

In review of an archived segment of the live broadcast from Modesto,
I was completely disgusted and was not "entertained". Promoting
speculative public opinion is not going to help solve this case or bring
the missing woman back home. It only fuels the fire of trial by media,
which has become the bane of professional broadcasting.
Clear Channel is guilty of many similar incidents where they have
incited criminal activity masked as entertainment. Coincidentally enough,
the morning after the live broadcast in front of the Peterson home,
their "supreme leader" Lowry Mays, CEO of Clear Channel was
summoned to testify before Congress in regards to their participation in
anti-competitive and oligopolistic practices.
Mr. May's prevaricated testimony was riddled with inconsistency and misrepresentation.

With someone like Mays at the helm of this corporate radio Death Star,
it is not surprising that the programming that emanates from this
corporation is hollow and determined only by demographic and market share.
Instead of putting the public's interest at the forefront of their
broadcasting responsibilities, it is the last consideration, if at all.
The sole force driving this hedonistic radio monster is the bottom line.
Pleasing their shareholders. Radio is in a state of disgrace, and
this recent incident proves that it continues to be
business as usual for the rich white Texas Corporation.
Clear Channel needs to be held responsible for the hate that it promotes
over the airwaves. Broadcasting is a very powerful medium,
and put in the wrong hands, we see how it can be used for evil purposes.
I urge KFI and Clear Channel to stop terrorizing the public with these
bad broadcasting behaviors. These two hosts should be in the
unemployment line immediately and license renewal for KFI should be protested.
I am also including in my list of recipients of this letter,
the Congressional committee to which Mr. Mays testified to on January 30, 2003,
the Federal Communications Commission as well as other interested parties.
As a former broadcaster and radio listener it is my duty to call attention to
these reprehensible activities. Clear Channel has many more issues
that trickle down to the cluster management level. This corporation needs a
thorough investigation into their current and past operational practices
and held accountable for the numerous illicit activities it participates in.
In conclusion I would like to re-iterate that as a member of the
greater Modesto community, I am outraged and incensed with Clear Channel
for their repugnant broadcasting practices. I am requesting that this letter be
officially recorded in the KFI Public File. I am also formally requesting a
written response explaining how Clear Channel justifies these shameful
broadcasting tactics as being in the public's best interest. It is my hope that
this complaint is escalated to the highest authority
to pursue a full investigation into these unethical business practices.
